Apple iPhone 13 Review: Everything You Need to Know

Every year, Apple produces an updated version of their flagship phone. The new iPhone 13 has some great features. One of the biggest changes is the camera technology. There are now three lenses on the back, providing excellent depth effects to all your pictures.

The other exciting feature is the battery life. Apple claims it can last up to seven hours longer than previous models! If you're out and about all day, this is exactly what you need to keep in touch with your family or friends without needing to find a power outlet for more than one day.

Any member of the current lineup would make for a good future iPhone 13 for you. However; let's compare all the different models and their specs. They may look similar, but they're far from the same, and one may be better for you than the others. Consider each model before you choose one!

iPhone 13 (Standard Version)

The iPhone 13 features a super retina XDR display, and it uses 5G, which can support streaming at the fastest download speeds. You'll also get a wide and an ultra wide lens that are great for pictures and videos.

This model unlocks with Face ID, so you don't need to use your fingerprint or a password. It has a ceramic shield front and uses aerospace-grade aluminum.

Like other models, you can use the iPhone 13 with all major carriers.

Storage and Size

The iPhone 13 measures 5.78 inches by 2.82 inches, and it's 0.3 inches deep; the screen takes up most of the width and height except for a smaller notch. It also weighs 6.14 ounces so it isn't too heavy.

When choosing this model you have the options of 128GB of storage or as much as 512GB. In the middle, you also have the option of getting 256GB of storage.

Display

The screen is 6.1 inches across the diagonal, and it's an OLED display. This iPhone's display has a resolution of 460 ppi (pixels per inch), and it shows 2532 by 1170 pixels.

It's also a True Tone display and a wide color display to help you see colors in the best possible way. You can get anywhere from about 800 to 1200 nits of brightness. And the iPhone features haptic touch.

Camera and Video

The iPhone 13 has an excellent camera system with the wide and ultra wide lenses. It also features night mode and deep fusion, and it has sensor-shift optical image stabilization.

You can also use the portrait mode and portrait lighting with different effects. This camera system will zoom out up to 2x and in up to 5x, and you can use the True Tone flash to capture better pictures with the iPhone 13 cameras.

Video recording is also amazing on this iPhone, with the ability to record 4K video with up to 60 fps (frames per second). If you record 1080p video, you can use cinematic mode to shoot with a bokeh effect.

You can also record videos in Slo-mo or Time-lapse. Except for serious photographers and videographers, many people should be able to replace their cameras with the iPhone 13.

Calling and Playback

Whether you want to make audio or video calls, you should consider the iPhone 13 features for that. You can use FaceTime to make video and audio calls, and you can use other calling apps.

WiFi calling and VoLTE (voice over LTE) are also available. That way, you can call others with iPhones or people with Androids or landline phones.

And you can use video playback for up to 19 hours per charge. Spatial audio playback is also available.

Apple Pay

SIM Card and Connector

When you buy an iPhone 13, you'll get to use a dual SIM that has a nano-SIM and an eSIM. The phone also supports dual eSIM cards, but it won't work with micro-SIM cards.

And like previous models of the iPhone, the 13 uses a lightning connector to charge or connect to other wired devices like headphones.

Battery and Power

The battery on an iPhone 13 is lithium-ion, and you can recharge it. It's also compatible with wireless Qi charging and MagSafe charging, so you can keep your phone safe.

If you have a computer, you can use the lightning to USB cable to charge the phone. And you can purchase a 20W adapter to take advantage of fast charging.

The power on this phone allows you to play videos for 15 to 19 hours, and you can play audio for up to 75 hours.

iPhone 13 Pro

The iPhone 13 Pro has a lot of the same basic features as the regular 13. However, you'll also get a LiDAR scanner to take portraits using night mode.

Another difference is that the Pro uses surgical-grade stainless steel instead of aluminum for the flat edges. This model is also water-resistant in up to six meters of water for half an hour.

Now, it is a bit more expensive than the iPhone 13 and 13 mini. But it can be worth investing more into a phone that offers some more advanced features.

No matter which carrier you use, consider some of the best iPhone 13 Pro features.

Storage and Size

iPhone 13 Pros are the same physical size as the iPhone 13. However, they weigh a bit more, with a weight of 7.19 ounces compared to the iPhone 13's 6.14 ounces.

You can choose from four storage capacity options, including 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage. If you plan to take a lot of pictures or store more documents locally, having more storage can be super nice.

Display

A lot of the display specs are the same as the regular iPhone 13, including an OLED display with True Tone, wide color, and haptic touch.

However, the iPhone 13 Pro display also features ProMotion technology that refreshes up to 120Hz. You can also get up to 1000 nits of brightness with the typical display and up to 1200 nits of brightness with the HDR display.

Camera and Video

The iPhone 13 Pro offers fantastic photos and videos with the camera app. It comes with a wide, ultra wide, and a telephoto lens, which offers a lot of the same features as the iPhone 13.

But you also get access to night mode portraits to help with low light performance overall. The Pro also comes with Apple ProRAW, which results in an image file like that of standalone cameras.

When taking videos, you get all of the same abilities as on the flagship iPhone. However, you can use ProRes video recording up to 4K videos.

At lower resolutions, you can also use Slo-mo and Time-lapse features to record videos. Time-lapse is even available using night mode.

Calling and Playback

The iPhone 13 Pro works with FaceTime to facilitate audio and video calls. You can make calls using WiFi or your cellular connection, and you can call devices with FaceTime or another video app.

Video calls work over 5G, so you can connect to friends all over the world. WiFi calling and VoLTE are standard features of the iPhone 13 Pro.

If you want to watch videos or listen to audio recordings, that's also an option. This model supports Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, and you can watch videos for up to 22 hours or listen to audio for as much as 75 hours.

Apple Pay

Another common feature of the iPhone 13 lineup is access to a digital wallet with Apple Pay. You can use your phone to pay for purchases:

• Within apps
• In stores

Apple Pay also works in the Messages app for when you need to pay friends or have them pay you. As long as you both have Apple devices, transferring money is easy.

Chip

The Pro has the same A15 bionic chip as the regular iPhone 13. Similarities between the chip include the fact that it has a 6-core CPU and a 16-core neural engine.

However, this chip also has a 5-core GPU instead of a 4-core GPU.

SIM Card and Connector

A SIM card is also crucial for being able to use the iPhone 13 Pro. This section is identical to that of the iPhone 13, with support for a Dual SIM and Dual eSIM.

If you have a micro-SIM card, you'll need to replace it with a nanoSIM. But you can use it with a lightning cable or wirelessly with a Qi charger.

Battery and Power

This model comes with a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with support for MagSafe charging. You can also plug the cable into a computer to charge your phone.

If you can't wait long to charge the phone, you can get an adapter that's 20W or higher. Then, you can charge your iPhone 13 Pro up to 50% battery in half an hour.

iPhone 13 Pro Max

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is the perfect upgrade from the iPhone 12 Pro Max or any other larger iPhone. It has the same internal chip as the iPhone 130 Pro, and the screen is also the same material.

However, the Pro Max is physically larger than the other iPhones. That makes it an excellent choice for anyone who can't see the smaller screens very well.

Like other models, this one features water resistance up to six meters for half an hour. You can also use this model with any of the major cell phone carriers.

If you like the iPhone 13 Pro but feel like it's missing something, consider the Pro max.

Storage and Size

When buying the Pro Max, you can choose from the same four storage capacities available on the Pro, including:

• 128GB
• 256GB
• 512GB
• 1TB

But you will find the Pro Max is bigger than all of the other iPhones. It's 6.33 inches tall and 3.07 inches wide, though the depth is the same at 0.3 inches. This model weighs 8.46 ounces, so it's quite a bit heavier, which may make it harder to hold for long periods.

Display

The iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with an OLED display that spans the entire width and height of the phone. It comes with ProMotion technology, haptic touch, True Tone, and wide color.

This model gets up to 1000 to 1200 nits of brightness, so it can be easy to see in the dark. You get a 2778 by 1284 pixel resolution that equates to 458 ppi.

Camera and Video

Like other iPhone 13s, this one has an excellent camera system. You get three lenses: wide, ultra wide, and telephoto, to make taking photos and videos easier and better.

This camera features sensor-shift optical image stabilization to help avoid shakiness. And you can zoom in and out more than on the regular iPhone 13. Portrait mode and night mode portraits are available.

When video recording, this phone takes great footage with the front or back camera. You can use cinematic mode, and you can record 4K videos with this device.

Time-lapse and Slo-mo are also available, with time-lapse working in night mode too. It's an excellent phone to help you get into taking photos or videos.

Calling and Playback

You can take or make video calls using FaceTime or a third-party video conferencing app. FaceTime works over 5G or WiFi, so you can contact people no matter where you are.

The same connectivity is available for audio calls, so you don't need to use video. But you'll also have access to VoLTE calling to help get a good signal.

And if you prefer to listen or watch recordings in addition to making calls, you can do that. Video playback can last up to 28 hours, while you can get up to 95 hours of audio playback.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay is available on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it has the same capabilities as on other iPhones. You can use the feature to pay for things in a store or online.

If you owe a friend money, you can also send them money through a text message. Apple Pay works with your debit or credit card, and you can build up your Apple Cash balance to use.

Chip

Because of its popularity, Apple is able to get chips to use in the iPhone Pro Max just like the other models. This iPhone comes with the same A15 bionic chip as other members in the lineup.

That chip has all of the same technical specs as the chip you get in an iPhone Pro.

SIM Card and Connector

You can use a Dual SIM or a Dual eSIM with the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use a current micro-SIM card with the new device.

But you can use your old iPhone charger. That way, you don't have to purchase an adapter just to plug in your phone. Instead, you can take it home and charge it like you would any previous model.

Battery and Power

Like most other iPhones, this one comes with a built-in lithium-ion battery that you can recharge. It offers MagSafe charging to keep your phone safe.

And you can use any Qi wireless charger so that you don't have to plug the battery in. Since it is a larger phone, this model has a bit more battery life than others. It can take about 35 minutes to reach 50% battery with a fast charger.

iPhone 13 Mini

If you prefer a smaller device, your ideal future iPhone 13 may be the 13 mini. This iPhone has a smaller screen, but it takes up the entirety of the front display.

That front has the same aerospace-grade aluminum as the flagship iPhone 13. If you want to save a bit of money and have your phone not take up a ton of space, it's worth considering the iPhone 13 mini.

While it doesn't have as many features as the Pro or Pro Max, the 13 mini is great. It works with the major carriers, and it can be a great upgrade or a good first iPhone.

Plus, it's water-resistant up to six meters for half an hour. Consider some of the best features of the iPhone 13 mini.

Storage and Size

The iPhone 13 mini has the same storage capacities as the regular iPhone: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. It measures 5.18 inches tall, 2.53 inches wide, and 0.3 inches deep.

At only 4.97 ounces, it's a lot lighter than all of the other iPhone models. You may want this model if you need a good iPhone but don't want it to take up much space in your pocket or bag.

Display

Like other iPhone 13s, this one uses an OLED display, and it features True Tone, wide color, and haptic touch. As with the regular iPhone 13, this one can reach up to 300 to 1200 nits of brightness.

The resolution on this model is 2340 by 1080 and has 476 ppi. It doesn't have ProMotion technology, so you should consider if you want that before going for this iPhone.

Camera and Video

You get a dual camera system with a wide and an ultra wide lens to take pictures or record videos. It has a night mode, True Tone flash, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization.

The front camera works just as well, and you can use it for portrait mode. Unfortunately, this model doesn't come with ProRes video or night mode portrait capabilities.

Still, you can take videos up to 4K, and you can use Time-lapse or Slo-mo modes. It's a fantastic choice for amateur photographers and videographers.

You can choose from a lot of settings to get the photos and videos you want.

Calling and Playback

Video and audio calls work well on the iPhone 13 mini. You can use FaceTime to make video calls on WiFi or with a cellular connection, but you can also use other calling apps.

If you prefer to use audio calls, you can do that with FaceTime audio, which also works on WiFi cellular. VoLTE is also useful if you need to make or take a phone call.

Outside of calls, video and audio playback features are great. The phone support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, and you can play video and audio for up to 17 and 55 hours, respectively.

Apple Pay

Whether you need to pay a friend or a store, you can do so with the iPhone 13 mini. You will use Face ID to authenticate the payment, and you can use it to pay online or in person.

Paying friends is easy with a text message. All you need to do is send the right amount using your debit or credit card or your Apple Cash balance.

Chip

The A15 bionic chip runs the iPhone 13 mini, and it has the same tech specs as the chip in the iPhone 13. This chip is faster than other smartphones, but it's not quite as fast as the chip in the Pro or Pro Max.

Still, it's fast enough for a lot of people. If you don't need the fastest chip available, you can get plenty of speed.

SIM Card and Connector

Of course, you can use this iPhone with a Dual SIM, and it supports a dual eSIM. You will need a new SIM card if you currently use a micro-SIM.

But you can use the lightning connector, so you can use your old iPhone charger after you upgrade. And you don't have to waste your old charger if it still works.

Battery and Power

The battery for the iPhone 13 mini is the same as the other iPhones, a lithium-ion battery. It's rechargeable, and it's compatible with MagSafe and Qi wireless chargers.

If you have a charging cable and a 20W adapter, you can charge the phone up to 50% in as little as 30 minutes. Then, you can take your phone with you and have enough battery to get through the day.
